THIS WEEK’S HEALTH FOCUS

This week (week of November 3rd) our health issue is ‘brain’ health.

Yoga incorporates different breathing techniques, physical postures and meditation aspects that impact neurological activity. Research in this field has shown that yoga is a noninvasive way to stimulate different areas of the brain associated with stress, memory, and cognitive function.  These findings suggest that yoga could provide preventive measures for age related neurodegenerative diseases, such as AD.

INFORMATION for ALL CLASSES

All classes include a breathing practice, warm-ups and an active sequence of poses to strengthen our core muscles and improve our flexibility and agility. The hatha and flow classes also feature standing and balancing poses and all classes close with relaxation poses and a meditation.

We spend significant time in each class doing warm-ups to get the fluid moving and our muscles working. We begin with eye and face yoga and then move to our joints including our neck, shoulders, feet & toes, ankles, knees and our spine.

As we get older it is vitally important to ensure we are adequately warmed up before we move into the more challenging poses.

Every week we focus on a health issue that may affect us as we age and issues where yoga has been proven to be a valuable tool. We have focused on issues such as improving our balance, increasing our strength and flexibility. maintaining a healthy brain and a healthy immune system, reducing stress, keeping our fascia healthy and we are always conscious of back pain issues.

This class includes 30-40 minutes of warm-up poses similar to the hatha yoga classes.  We then move into strength building and stretching poses to build muscle and improve our flexibility, all while sitting on a chair. We conclude our class laying on a mat or bed or couch for a final stretch and savasana and meditation. This is an excellent class for anyone seeking a gentler yoga and/or those who may have mobility or balance issues.

Flow Yoga

The class will close with 10 minute cool-down poses and a short meditation. This is a class for anyone who wants an energetic, fast moving class to start your weekend.

Floor Stretching

With Melanie Anderson

The Saturday floor stretching class also include 30-40 minutes of warm-ups and we then move into floor stretching and some core building poses to increase our strength and improve our flexibility. This is an excellent complement to our flow class, moving from an energetic class to a slower moving stretch class.

During the Saturday floor stretching class we may hold  some of the poses for 1-2 minutes to reach a little deeper into the connective tissue and improve our flexibility. If you register for this class you will also receive an invitation for the earlier flow class and  receive a recording for both.

The Wednesday floor stretching class is only 45 minutes and a great mid-week class. We do all the same elements of the Saturday class but move through the poses a little more quickly.
